VR for Architects: Design Review
VR in design review is a scale checking instrument. It reliably catches problems that drawings hide: ceiling heights that feel oppressive at their designed dimension, sightlines that fail from a seated position, corridors that read wider in plan than they feel, and the relationship between a window head and eye level. Use it during schematic and design development, at low visual quality, rather than as a presentation tool at the end when changing anything is expensive.
The practices getting real value from VR use it ugly and early rather than polished and late.
What VR catches that drawings do not
Perceived volume is the main one. A ceiling at a given height feels different depending on room width, window position and material, and no section conveys that. The second is sightlines from real positions, particularly seated, which matter in restaurants, offices, auditoriums and any space where people are not standing.

Use it early and unfinished
An untextured gray model in VR answers spatial questions completely. Waiting until materials and lighting are resolved means reviewing at a point where a scale change cascades through documentation. The value is in the timing, and a review that costs a few hours at schematic can prevent a change order later.
Keep the model review ready
The practical obstacle is not the headset, it is the export. If getting the current model into VR takes a day, it happens once and then stops. Establish a workflow where the live model can be viewed in under an hour, and it becomes a routine part of design rather than an event. This is the single decision that determines whether VR sticks in a practice.
Client review is a different exercise
Clients in VR need orientation, a fixed route and short sessions. Left free to roam they get lost, look at the wrong things and report on the finishes rather than the space. Guide the session explicitly and ask specific questions rather than inviting general impressions, which produce commentary you cannot act on.
Consultant coordination
Reviewing a coordinated model in VR surfaces clashes that a clash detection report describes but does not communicate. A duct that technically fits but visually dominates a corridor reads immediately in VR and barely registers in a report. This is a strong argument for a coordination review before documentation locks.
What VR does not do
It does not evaluate material quality, color under real light, or acoustics, and treating it as a substitute for samples and mockups produces bad decisions. Its domain is space, scale and sequence. Comparison with other formats is covered in VR versus 360 tours.
Fee positioning
Some practices absorb VR review as a quality control cost, others bill it as an enhanced service. Both work, but decide before the proposal. Introducing it midway through design development as an additional fee tends to be declined, and then the review does not happen at all.
