What a render actually is
In interior design, a render is a computer-generated image that shows how a finished room will look before any construction or furnishing happens. It applies materials, lighting, furniture, and finishes to a 3D model of the space so a client can see the design intent rather than imagine it from a floor plan.
Renders differ from hand sketches or mood boards because they are dimensionally accurate. The camera angle, ceiling height, window placement, and furniture scale all match the real room, which makes the render useful for approvals, not just inspiration.
When designers commission one
Most interior designers request a render at the point where a concept has been agreed with a client but before purchase orders go out for furniture, millwork, or finishes. This lets the client sign off on color, layout, and material combinations while changes are still cheap.
Renders are also common in marketing packages for model units, show homes, and hospitality projects where the finished space needs to be sold or leased before it physically exists.
