When a Composite Beats a Full Rendering
A composite and a full rendering can show the same building from the same position and they are not the same product, because one of them constructs the entire scene and the other photographs most of it.
That difference determines cost, credibility, what is possible and what is not. This guide is about deciding which one a specific viewpoint and a specific audience actually needs, because most developments need both and buying the wrong one for a given job is common.
The fundamental difference, stated once
In a full rendering, everything in the frame was made by somebody. The street, the neighbouring buildings, the trees, the sky, the vehicles, the people. Every element is a decision and every element can be adjusted.
In a composite, only the proposal was made. Everything else is a record of a real place at a real moment, and none of it can be adjusted without moving the image away from being a record.
Everything that follows is a consequence of that. The composite is cheaper where the context is complicated, more credible where the audience knows the place, and impossible where no camera can stand.
Where the composite wins clearly
Any audience that knows the site. Neighbours, community groups, local officials and anybody who walks past regularly have a mental picture of that street, and a composite works with it rather than asking them to replace it with somebody rendering of it.
Any argument about height and relationship, because the existing buildings in the photograph supply the scale reference automatically and at no cost, and no viewer has to trust that they were modelled correctly.
Complicated context. A dense historic street, a wooded valley, a landscape with distant hills. All of that arrives correct in a photograph and all of it is expensive and unconvincing when rendered.
Old fabric specifically. What makes a nineteenth century facade read as real is a century of irregularity that a render either omits, producing sterility, or attempts, producing approximation.
Where the full rendering wins clearly
Any viewpoint no camera can occupy. Aerials, views from a floor level that does not exist yet, views from inside a building that has not been built, views from over a neighbouring property.
Any condition that cannot be photographed. Night scenes with the proposal illuminated, a summer evening when the photography happened in February, a future condition where surrounding development has also been built.
Any situation where the context needs to be shown as it will be rather than as it is. A masterplan where several phases are proposed, or a street where other approved projects will exist by completion.
And interiors, entirely, since there is nothing to photograph until the shell exists.
The credibility difference, and who notices it
This is the part of the comparison that matters most and is discussed least.
A full rendering is a depiction and sophisticated viewers treat it as one. They know the trees were placed, the light was chosen, the neighbouring building was modelled by somebody who may not have visited, and that the whole frame was composed to flatter.
A composite carries a different implicit claim. The photograph is a record, and the viewer knows they could go and stand there. That makes the image checkable, which makes it trusted, and it also means an error in it is far more damaging than the same error in a rendering.
For a friendly audience the difference is modest. For a sceptical one it is decisive, and sceptical audiences are exactly where visualization budgets earn or lose their value.
The cost comparison, which is not what people assume
For a ground level contextual view, the composite is usually cheaper, because the expensive part of a contextual render is the context and the composite gets it free.
That gap widens as the context gets more complicated. A building on an empty site is roughly comparable either way. A building in a dense street with mature trees is dramatically cheaper as a composite, because rendering all of that convincingly is most of the work.
The gap narrows and inverts when the photograph itself is expensive to obtain or when heavy occlusion has to be reconstructed. A view through a row of street trees carries substantial manual work that a rendering avoids entirely by simply placing the trees.

A rendering gives complete control and a composite gives almost none, and which of those is an advantage depends entirely on the purpose.

For persuasion of a sceptical audience, control is a liability. Every element that was chosen is an element that can be questioned, and a viewer who suspects the scene was curated discounts everything in it.
The composite trades control for evidentiary weight, and a project that needs to be believed rather than admired should generally make that trade.
What each format proves, and what it merely suggests
It helps to separate the claim each format is entitled to make, because that is what determines how an audience is entitled to read it.
A composite from a surveyed position proves where the building will sit and how large it will read from that specific place, on that specific day, in those specific conditions. That is a narrow claim and it is a strong one, and it is checkable by anybody willing to walk there.
A full rendering suggests what the building will look like. It is a considered depiction by people who read the drawings, and it is entitled to be persuasive about character, material and quality. It is not entitled to be read as proof of anything about the surroundings, because the surroundings were constructed.
Confusion between those two claims is the source of most disputes about visualization. An audience treating a rendering as evidence will feel misled by something that was never claiming to be evidence, and a project presenting a composite without saying whether the camera was measured is inviting exactly that confusion.

If the audience is local and the argument is about how the building sits among what already exists, choose the composite. Nothing else answers that question with the same authority, and the money spent on rendering context would be spent reproducing something a camera captures for free.
If the audience is remote, if the point is character and quality rather than relationship, or if the best available viewpoint is somewhere no camera can stand, choose the rendering. A composite from a poor position is worse than a good render from a chosen one.
And if the single image has to serve both audiences, which is the common case, a composite from a well chosen ground level position usually carries further, because it can be admired and it can also be checked, and only one of those two properties is available in the alternative.
