What Are the Three Types of Rendering?

In architectural and 3D visualization, rendering is generally grouped into three types: still image rendering, animation rendering, and interactive or real-time rendering, each suited to different presentation needs.

Still image rendering

This produces a single high-quality image of a scene, often used for marketing materials, listings, or presentation boards.

Because it only needs to render one frame, still rendering can afford higher detail and longer render times than animation.

Animation rendering

Animation rendering produces a sequence of frames that play back as a video, such as a flythrough or walkthrough of a building.

Each frame must be rendered individually, which makes animation far more time and resource intensive than a single still image.

Interactive or real-time rendering

This type lets a viewer navigate a scene live, changing the camera angle in real time rather than watching a pre-rendered video.

It is commonly used for VR walkthroughs and interactive configurators where user control matters more than maximum image detail.
