How Long Architectural Drafting Takes
Drafting duration is driven by three things: how usable the source material is, how settled the design is, and how many review cycles sit between the first draft and the final issue. In our experience the drawing production itself is the predictable part, and the schedule risk lives in the gaps around it, waiting for a decision, waiting for a consultant's drawings, or absorbing a review comment that changes the plan. A realistic timeline is built by counting those cycles, not by counting sheets.
Clients usually ask for a duration before anyone has looked at the files, which is the point at which the answer is least reliable. When we scope architectural drafting we ask what condition the source is in and whether the design is final, because those two answers move the calendar more than the size of the building does.
What consumes the schedule
Reconstructing unusable source material. Redrawing from a PDF or a scan is a phase, not an overhead. Building from field measurements adds a site visit and a verification pass on top of that. Native CAD or a live model skips all of it.
Unresolved design decisions. A drawing cannot be finished ahead of the decision it documents. When a stair, a wall type or a window schedule is still open, the sheets that depend on it stall, and drafting around the gap usually means drafting it twice.
Consultant coordination. Structural, mechanical and civil drawings arrive on their own schedule, and the architectural set has to reconcile with them. Each exchange is a round trip.
Review cycles. Internal review, client review, and jurisdictional review are each a stop. Plan review turnaround is set by the authority, not by us, and it varies widely by jurisdiction and season.
Revisions. On projects where the design is still moving, revision work has frequently exceeded the original drafting in our experience. This is the single most underestimated line in a drafting schedule.
What does not consume much schedule
Repetition is cheap. A building with identical floors, repeated unit types or a repetitive structural bay adds area without adding much time.
Sheet count on its own is misleading, because sheets can be reorganized without changing the underlying work.
Large but simple envelopes, warehouse and industrial shells in particular, cover a lot of square footage with comparatively little drafting content.
How to compress a drafting schedule
- Send the native files if they exist. This removes an entire phase rather than shortening one.
- Freeze the decisions that the drawings depend on before production starts, or tell us explicitly which ones are still open so those sheets are sequenced last.
- Name one reviewer with authority to approve. Consolidated comments from one voice are faster than reconciling three sets of contradictory markups.
- Get the jurisdiction's submittal checklist early so the set is assembled against the right specification the first time. What that involves is covered in what belongs in a permit set.

Why we quote a schedule after seeing the files
A duration given before anyone opens the source material is a guess dressed as a commitment. Once we can see whether the drawings are editable, how complete the design is and who else has to sign off, the schedule becomes something we can actually hold to.
