These three formats get used interchangeably in conversation and they are not interchangeable in practice. Choosing the wrong one is the most common way a visualization budget gets spent without moving the decision it was meant to move.

A still rendering answers "what does it look like"

One fixed viewpoint, composed deliberately. It is the right tool for a listing, a brochure, a board packet, or anywhere the image has to survive being printed or dropped into a slide. It is the cheapest per image and the easiest to control, because you decide exactly what the viewer sees.

A walkthrough answers "how does it unfold"

A cinematic animation moving along a planned camera path, typically 60 to 90 seconds. You control the sequence: entry, transition, reveal, exit. A virtual tour answers "let me look at that again"

An interactive 360-degree experience the viewer navigates themselves. They stop where they want, look up, turn around, go back to the kitchen a third time. You give up control of the sequence and you get something a walkthrough cannot deliver: the viewer's own pace, and the specific questions they choose to answer.

That last property is what makes tours valuable in a sales context and wasteful in a presentation context. If you are presenting to a room, you want a walkthrough, because you are narrating. If someone is evaluating alone at eleven at night on the other side of the world, you want a tour.

When a Virtual Tour Earns Its Cost, and When It Does Not

A tour costs more than a still and takes longer to produce, because every viewpoint in the navigation has to hold up under inspection. There is no bad angle to hide, since the viewer chooses the angle. That expense is justified in some situations and hard to justify in others. Node Placement Is What Separates a Good Tour From a Frustrating One

A tour is a set of viewpoints, called nodes, connected by navigation. Everything about how the tour feels comes down to where those nodes sit and how they link. This is the part of production that is invisible when it is done well and intolerable when it is not.

One node per room is the floor, not the target

A node in the centre of each room gets a viewer into every space and leaves the experience feeling like teleporting between disconnected photographs. Adding transition nodes at thresholds and along corridors is what converts a set of images into a building. The viewer's mental map depends on seeing the connection between spaces, not just the spaces.

Node height should be eye height

Placing a node too high produces a subtle sense of floating that viewers cannot identify but respond to, and it makes ceilings feel lower and rooms feel smaller. Placing it too low reads as a child's perspective. Consistent eye-height placement across every node is one of the cheapest ways to make a tour feel like a place.

Do not put a node where a person could not stand

Inside a wall, floating above a stairwell, in the middle of a kitchen island. These occur when nodes are placed against a plan drawing rather than against the model, and each one breaks the illusion the rest of the tour is working to build.

Every node needs an obvious way out

The single most common complaint about interactive tours is getting stuck: arriving somewhere and being unable to find the link back. Navigation links should be visible from the natural viewing direction, not hidden behind the viewer, and every node should connect to at least two others so a viewer is never forced to reverse exactly the way they came.

More nodes is not automatically better

Production cost scales with node count, because each one is a fully rendered viewpoint. Past a certain density, additional nodes stop improving comprehension and start making navigation tedious. We scope node count against the floor plan and the way people will actually move, rather than against a number in a package tier.

Getting Value Out of a Tour After It Is Delivered

A surprising number of commissioned tours end up as a link on a page that nobody clicks. The asset is only worth what it is deployed into, and a few decisions at delivery determine most of that.

Put it where the decision happens

A tour buried on a portfolio page reaches people who are browsing. A tour embedded on the specific unit or project page reaches people who are evaluating. The second audience is smaller and worth far more, and the embed is the same amount of work either way.

Give it a reason to be opened

An unlabelled embed reads as decoration. A line of context, what the viewer will be able to do and why it is worth two minutes, materially changes how many people engage with it. This costs one sentence.

Use the stills you already paid for

Every tour delivery includes high-resolution stills exportable from any viewpoint. These are already produced, already consistent with the tour, and are frequently left unused while the same team commissions separate images for the listing and the brochure. Pull the stills from the tour instead.

Send the link directly, not just publish it

For remote and international buyers, the tour is most effective as something sent to a named person during an active conversation, not as something they are expected to discover. The offline file package exists for the same reason: a sales centre without reliable connectivity should still be able to run it.

Decide what you want it to replace

A tour that is meant to reduce speculative site visits should be presented before a visit is scheduled. A tour meant to support a visit belongs afterwards, as something a prospect can revisit while deciding. Both work. Deploying one where the other was intended is the most common way a good tour underperforms.

Common Questions About Virtual Tours

Do I need an existing building to have a tour made?

No, and pre-construction is the primary use case. Photographic 360 capture requires a finished space. Our tours are built from architectural drawings, which means they exist before the building does. That is the entire point for a pre-sales campaign.

Does a viewer need a VR headset?

No. Tours run in a normal browser with mouse or touchscreen navigation. Headset viewing is possible where a client wants it, but it is never a requirement, and designing around a headset requirement usually reduces how many people actually look at the tour.

How many viewpoints does a tour need?

Enough that a viewer never feels stuck, which in practice means one node per room plus transition points in corridors and at thresholds. Too few nodes and navigation feels like teleporting between disconnected images. Too many and production cost climbs without improving comprehension. We scope nodes against the floor plan rather than against a fixed number.

Can the tour show different material options?

Yes, and this is one of the stronger arguments for a tour over stills in a sales-center context, since a prospect can compare finish packages in the same space. Be aware of the cost structure: each option set is effectively a re-render of every affected viewpoint, so two full finish schemes is closer to two tours than to one tour plus an extra.

Can I get stills from the tour instead of commissioning renders separately?

Yes. High-resolution stills export from any viewpoint, and this is usually the cheaper path when you need both formats. The 3D model is shared, so commissioning the tour and the stills together costs materially less than commissioning them as separate engagements.

What is the difference between this and a Matterport scan?

A Matterport-style scan captures a space that already exists, using a camera on site. Our tours are rendered from architectural documentation for spaces that do not exist yet. The viewing experience is comparable, and the two tours embedded above are delivered through that same viewer, but the production path and the use case are different: scanning documents reality, rendering proposes it.
